Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Jupiter, FL) - Despite jumping out to a 6-0 lead, the Vero Beach Dodgers could not hold off the Palm Beach Cardinals and dropped a 10-7 decision Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Dodgers issued seven walks and committed four errors in defeat. The series continues Friday night at 7:05 PM. Vero burst out of the gates with a 5-run first inning. Xavier Paul and Travis Denker led off with back-to-back singles. Paul scored on a wild pitch and Denker came in on Blake DeWitt's double. Cory Dunlap added an RBI single and Jeremy Todd drove in two runs with a double. Starter Blake Johnson kept up his end of the bargain by setting the Cardinals down in order in the bottom half of the first. The Dodgers then tacked on another run in the second when Cole Bruce doubled in DeWitt. Not much went right after that. Johnson started the bottom of the second by hitting Terry Evans. He then walked the next three batters to give the Cardinals their first run. A fielder's choice brought in the second and Tyler Greene delivered a 2-run double to pull Palm Beach within 6-4. Ryan Barthelemy led off the bottom of the third with a triple and scored on a groundout to make it a one-run game. Palm Beach then took the lead in the fourth, but not before an exciting defensive stand for the Dodgers. With Bradon Yarbrough at second base, Ty Parker singled to right field. Xavier Paul gunned down Yarbrough at the plate for the second out of the inning to keep the Dodgers ahead. However Greene walked and Juan Lucena singled home the tying run. Greene then came on a wild pitch to give the Cardinals their first lead at 7-6. The Dodgers tied it in the sixth when Jamie Hoffman led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice from Paul and scored on Travis Denker's ground out. Palm Beach immediately answered off reliever Brent Leach, who took the loss. Parker and Greene drew one-out walks. Then with two outs in the inning, Barthelemy's grounder was misplayed at first base and the lead run came home. The Cardinals would add two more unearned runs in the eighth inning to cap the scoring. Vero Beach had one last threat when Denker and Bruce walked in the ninth. Cardinals closer Mike Sillman rebounded to retire the next two hitters and earn his 11th save.
