Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

Clearwater, FL– The Vero Beach Dodgers and Clearwater Threshers didn't quite make it through their scheduled double-header Monday night as the nightcap was washed out, but the Dodgers did squeeze in a 6-3 victory in the opener to complete a three-game sweep. The Dodgers got to the Clearwater starter early in game one, scoring three, second inning runs against RHP Lee Gwaltney to take the 3-0 lead. LF Brian Sprout's RBI-triple scored 1B Scott Gillitzer, who had singled to start the inning. DH Trey Dyson singled home Sprout to make it 2-0 before the final score came across courtesy of the error by 2B Ralph Santana.

The final three runs the Dodgers would score over the next four innings all came on the strength of solo homers as 3B Andy LaRoche took Gwaltney deep in the third and 2B Delwyn Young and RF Bryan Goelz each went yard against LHP Beau Richardson in the sixth. Young's homer, his 15th on the season, matched his career-best for homers in a season.

RHP Casey Hoorelbeke was the beneficiary of the Dodger scoring, going five innings, allowing one earned run to pick up his fourth win of the season. He has now allowed just one earned run over at least five innings in four consecutive starts.

Clearwater got to RHP Rich Bartlett, who relieved Hoorelbeke in the seventh, scoring two runs, one unearned over the final two innings, but it was too little, too late as the Dodgers hung on for the 6-3 victory.

The Dodgers led 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning in the second game before hard rain forced the umpires to pull the plug and prematurely end the series. The fourth and final game of the series will not be made up.

The Dodgers now head to the back half of their eight-game West Division road trip, starting a four-game series in Tampa Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Jarod Plummer (2-3, 4.24) will toe the rubber for the Dodgers in the first contest between the two first place teams.
