Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - Jacob Misiorowski struck out six over a career-high four innings, Nate Peterson turned in five scoreless relief innings, Matt Wood went 3-for-3 while reaching base safely five times and Blayberg Diaz went 2-for-4 as the Carolina Mudcats (playing as los Pescados de Carolina) defeated the Fredericksburg Nationals 6-1 with a season-high 5,074 fans in attendance on Saturday night at Five County Stadium.
Carolina (18-12) scored first as Wood brought in Kay-Lan Nicasia in the first with a screaming double to center off Fredericksburg (10-20) starter Bryan Sanchez. Wood then struck again in the fifth with a go-ahead RBI single that broke a 1-1 tie and put Carolina on top again 2-1. Overall, Wood reached base safely five times in the game while going 3-for-3 with two walks, one run, a double and two RBI.
Carolina led 2-1 through the sixth before breaking the game open with a four run seventh. Reliever Jose Atencio allowed all four runs in the seventh and the go-ahead run in the fifth while taking the loss. He originally entered in the fifth in place of Sanchez and left with one out and two men on in the seventh.
The seventh included a two-run single from Daniel Guilarte, a RBI single from Jace Avina and a run-scoring groundout by Jadher Areinamo. Guilarte's hit knocked Atenico out of the game, while Avina's hit came off reliever Tyler Yankosky. Avina's hit also brought across one of the two inherited runners that Yankosky allowed in from Atencio.
Misiorowski started for Carolina and set career highs in innings pitched and total pitches as he worked through four complete with 60 pitches (37 strikes). He also allowed one run and scattered just two hits in his solid outing.
Peterson (2-1) took over in the fifth and went on to hold the visiting Nationals scoreless the rest of the way. He also allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out four while earning the victory.
The victory was Carolina's third straight and lifted them to a 3-2 lead in the six-game series. The series will conclude on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Five County Stadium. RHP Logan Henderson is scheduled to start for the Mudcats in Sunday's series finale.
Sunday's game is WakeMed Five County Family Sunday with $7.00 Box Seat tickets and on-field post-game catch.
