Shorebirds Walked Off by Wood Ducks in Game 5

KINSTON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (16-14) suffered a heartbreaking walk-off defeat at the hands of the Down East Wood Ducks (18-12) on Saturday night by a score of 5-4.
Stiven Acevedo powered the Shorebirds in front in the top of the second on a no-doubt home run to left field to make it 1-0 Delmarva.
Down East tied the game in the third on an RBI double by Abi Ortiz.
In the fifth, the Shorebirds broke the tie with a two-out, RBI double by Elio Prado to score Victor Gonzalez to give Delmarva a 2-1 edge. The next batter, Samuel Basallo, belted a two-run homer over the wall in right to push the Shorebirds' advantage to 4-1.
The Wood Ducks would chip away by getting one run back in the bottom of the inning, followed by another tally in the sixth to cut the Delmarva lead to 4-3.
Edgar Portes pitched a scoreless seventh followed by Yaqui Rivera who put a zero on the board in the eighth to keep it 4-3 Delmarva with one inning left to play.
After the Shorebirds stranded a pair in scoring position and did not score in the top of the ninth. Down East put runners at first and second with two outs. Tucker Mitchel then singled to left field to score the tying run, Andres Mesa with the throw to home from Stiven Acevedo air mailing Samuel Basallo, allowing the winning run in Anthony Gutierrez to score as well, ending the game with Shorebirds taking a heartbreaking 5-4 loss.
Dylan MacClean (2-0) was the winning pitcher for the Wood Ducks with Yaqui Rivera (0-2) taking the loss for the Shorebirds.
Samuel Basallo added to his league-leading RBI total as his two-run homer was his fourth of the season giving him 32 runs batted in. Stiven Acevedo also hit his fourth homer of the year as he reached three time total in the game.
Delmarva will now look to salvage a series split on Mother's Day with Alfred Vega set to get the ball in the finale versus the Wood Ducks with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
