Vermont Mountaineers News Release
LACONIA, N.H. - The Mountaineers shut down a potential Winnipesaukee Muskrat run on Wednesday evening after another explosive night at the bats, collecting a 13-4 victory at Robbie Mills Sports Complex in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
Vermont continued their stellar offensive stretch, recording 16 hits and the first Mountaineer grand slam of the season en route to another double-digit performance and their fourth-straight victory.
Although the Muskrats nearly got out of the second inning with little issue after collecting two quick outs, the Mountaineer offense erupted for four runs, first with an Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook) single with runners on second and third that brought Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) home. Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) followed up with another single, this time allowing Kevin Brenning (Florence, Al. / University of North Alabama) and Giordano to score. Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) finished the job on a single, giving Gauthier time to pick up the fourth run of the frame.
Vermont resumed their timely hitting in the fourth inning, with Brenning drilling an RBI double that gave McDermott his second run of the game. Gauthier garnered his own double on the next at-bat, enabling Brenning to pick up another score. The Muskrat defense could not halt the Mountaineers in the following frame, as Vermont recorded two more doubles by Straton Podaras (Glen Head, N.Y. / Radford University) and McDermott that let Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) and Podaras collect two runs.
The Winnipesaukee offense got a much-needed jolt in the bottom frame, as Brayden Cooney nailed a home run for the first Muskrat run. Although Robison added another Mountaineer score in the sixth, Winnipesaukee tacked on three more runs in the sixth and seventh innings from Sam Cochrance, Tatem Levins and Nate Vigeant to cut into the Vermont lead, making it 9-4.
Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) broke the game open on a grand slam in the eighth, ripping one out past the fence with Gauthier, Robison and Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) all on base. The Muskrats could not make up any ground, getting two hits in the ninth but could not convert them into runs as Vermont ran away with the 13-4 victory.
Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Le Moyne College) earned his second win of the season, allowing six hits and three runs in six innings of play for the Mountaineers. Drew Martin took the loss for Winnipesaukee, giving up eight hits and six runs while striking out just one of the 19 Mountaineers faced in tonight's game.
Vermont has now evened out their overall record at 7-7 and will have tomorrow off before returning home for a doubleheader against the Ocean State Waves on Friday, Jun. 28. The first game is set for 6:30 p.m., with the second game scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
