Cats Claw Their Way Through Extras

June 26, 2019 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

On a rain-filled day in New England the SwampBats and SteepleCats matched up as the rain stopped just in time for the game to get underway. After dropping 3 in a row the SteepleCats turned to one of their youngest starting pitching talents as Mason Ronan took the hill in a game where pitching and defense were going to be at a premium. The left-hander did not disappoint allowing only 3 hits and 2 runs over his time on the mound. This was the start that the Cats were looking for out of the young lefty as he gave his club a chance to win as the game moved into the latter stages. Trailing by 2 runs in the 7th inning the SteepleCats pushed two runs across with two outs to tie up the game. The Cats offense was relentless as all three of their runs came with 2 outs. After Jacob Abbott went 2 innings Madison Jeffery came in and pitched a clean 8th inning and danced out of trouble in the 9th to send the game into extra innings. In the 10th inning neither team was able to push a run across as emotions were running high and players and fans lived and died on each at-bat. Then in the 11th inning, which would be the final inning regardless of score, the SteepleCats pinch ran Tre Kirklin at 2nd base. Matt Koperniak rolled over on a changeup and moved Tre to third, then Josh Loeffler battled with one out and the infield in. He hit a groundball to the shortstop who tried to look Tre back to third and then made the strong throw to first, but right as the ball left his hand Tre left the blocks and headed for home. The first baseman fired home and Tre dove in head first just underneath the tag as he broke the 3-3 tie with his lightning speed. We'd post a picture of the play, but he's so fast he out ran our camera flash. Then in the bottom of the 11th it was all MJ as Madison Jeffery continued to impose his will with an upper 90s fastball and a dynamite slider Jeffery shut the door and on the last flyout of the game let out a roar to signal that the Cats were back on the prowl. In a huge game to maintain their first place standing the Cats scratched and clawed their way to a hard-fought victory. Now sitting at 9-4 the Cats haven't even gotten through a third of the season, but there was a bit of a playoff atmosphere in the air at Keene last night.
