Staten Island FerryHawks News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY- Dilson Herrera's game-winning tenth-inning single scored Angel Aguilar to earn the FerryHawks a 5-4 win Wednesday night at SIUH Community Park. The victory makes it back-to-back wins against the Blue Crabs, preventing Southern Maryland from clinching the first-half North Division Title.

Tied 4-4 entering the home half of the tenth inning, the FerryHawks executed some small ball to generate the winning run. With Angel Aguilar placed on second to start the inning, Ricardo Cespedes laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Aguilar to third. Herrera followed by grounding a single up the middle to give Staten Island their fourth walk-off win of the 2022 season.

Victor Capellan (4-2), despite blowing a save in the ninth inning, tossed a scoreless tenth inning to preserve the 4-4 tie. The Blue Crabs nearly scored the go-ahead run in the tenth, but Ian Yetsko was thrown out at home plate on Zach Collier's double.

Mat Latos (1-2) only recorded one out in the tenth inning before giving up the single to Herrera. The FerryHawks have scored against Latos in his last two appearances against Staten Island.

The FerryHawks hopped out to an early 3-0 lead to support Dakota Freese in his seventh start of the season. A third-inning sacrifice fly by Antoine Duplantis plated Yunior Santana, allowing the FerryHawks to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Sparked by a Michal Baca error at shortstop, the FerryHawks rallied for two more runs in the fourth inning to extend their advantage. With Aguilar on second (Baca error) and Cespedes on first (single), Mariel Bautista bashed the McKenzie Mills offer off the wall in deep centerfield. Both Aguilar and Cespedes came around to score, while Bautista was nabbed at third trying to stretch his double into a triple.

Freese held the Blue Crabs in check, facing them for the second time in six days. He tossed six innings of three-run baseball (one earned), with a season-high nine strikeouts and season-low one walk. All three runs scored in the fifth inning - the first on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Jack Sundberg. With runners on the corners and two outs, Michael Wielansky hit slow roller to the right of the pitcher's mound. Freese scooped it up and threw wide to first base, allowing the Blue Crabs second run to score. The chaotic sequence continued when Mariel Bautista threw the ball wild back to home plate, pushing home another run to tie the game 3-3.

Mills, meanwhile, twirled seven innings, but was touched for seven hits and four runs. He struck out six and walked four.

Javier Betancourt gave the lead immediately back to the FerryHawks in the bottom of the fifth, starting the frame with a solo blast over the left-field fence. His second home run of the season gave Staten Island a 4-3 lead.

Eddy Reynoso and Jose Velez preserved the 4-3 lead until handing it off to Capellan in the top of the ninth. Joe DeLuca worked a one-out walk, before Baca singled to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Following a wild pitch, Capellan issued a walk to Sundberg to load the bases for Wielansky. The Blue Crabs second baseman hit a Baltimore chopper back to Capellan, who had the ball slip out of his hands in his attempt to fire quickly home for the force out. The error allowed Southern Maryland to tie the game 4-4. Capellan worked out of any further danger by striking out Jared Walker and getting David Harris to fly out to right field.

Staten Island (17-37) and Southern Maryland conclude their three-game series on Thursday at SIUH Community Park. LHP Anthony Rodriguez tosses for the FerryHawks against Blue Crabs RHP Daryl Thompson. First pitch is slated for 6:30 PM with the FerryHawks Pregame Show starting at 6:15 PM on the SI FerryHawks YouTube Stream.
