Dillas fall in pitchers' duel

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas and the Laredo Broncos battled back-and-forth all game long, but an eighth inning RBI gave the Broncos the win over the Dillas 3-2 on Monday night in front of 2,912 fans at the Amarillo National Dilla Villa.

Dillas starter Dustin Taylor (2-4) got the loss, despite only allowing six hits and struck out nine in the effort. Broncos starter Gregorio Martinez (2-3) got the win as he went seven inning and allowed six hits and two runs while striking out five. Broncos reliever Jason Herman got his first save off the season despite allowing two base runners in the ninth.

Laredo was able to get on the board first for the third time in the series. In the third inning, Ryan Flynn walked and scored on an RBI double by David Cardona for a 1-0 Broncos lead.

Amarillo would respond in the bottom of the fourth as Keanon Simon led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Andrew Wong RBI triple. Wong would score on a Carlos Figueroa sacrifice fly RBI to give the Dillas a 2-1 lead.

The Amarillo lead would hold until the sixth inning as Laredo's Argelis Nunez hit a solo homerun, his fourth of the year, for a tie game 2-2.

In the eighth, the Broncos would break the tie as Mario Mendez singled and scored on a towering flyball single by Nunez to give Laredo a 3-2 lead.

The Dillas would step up in the ninth and put two runners on base against Herman, but could not bring any runners home as the Dillas fall in the game, but take three of four from the Broncos.

With the win, the Dillas improve to 17-14, while the Broncos fall to 9-22. Tuesday, Amarillo will host the Edinburg Roadrunners for the opening game of a four-game series at 7:05pm with Dillas Pre-Game set to begin at 6:55pm online via AudioSportsOnline.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
