KEARNEY - The Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League will be hosting various dignitaries in Kearney on Saturday for the team's sled hockey clinic and exhibition presented by the Kearney Hub newspaper. The dignitaries will also be in attendance when the Storm faces Indiana on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.

The sled hockey clinic will be from 8-9:45 a.m. tomorrow morning at the FirsTier Event Center. The clinic is for people of all ages and for those with or without disabilities. The sled hockey clinic is free of charge.

The Storm will welcome numerous notables from around the state for both the clinic and the Storm game. Those in attendance will include: Kearney resident Amber Watson, the current Ms. Wheelchair Nebraska, Mark Lunquist, president of the Great Plains Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), Steve Zaracki, the sports program coordinator for the PVA and Paul Rauner of Lincoln, the head of Nebraska Sled Hockey.

"I'm excited about this because it's not just for disabled people. It's a great opportunity for the public to become more aware the different trials people with disabilities go through to participate in certain activities," said Watson. "I've never tried sled hockey, but I'm excited to give it a shot."

Sled hockey was invented in Sweden during the 1960's by a group of Swedes who, despite their physical impairment, wanted to continue playing hockey. The men modified a metal frame sled, or sledge, with two regular-sized ice hockey skate blades that allowed the puck to pass underneath. Using round poles with bike handles for sticks, the men played without any goaltenders on a lake south of Stockholm.
