CHARLOTTE, NC (June 3, 2015) - The Charlotte Independence today announced goalkeeper Diego Restrepo has been granted a transfer to Venezuelan First Division club Metropolitanos FC. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Restrepo appeared in one USL match for the Independence, as well as two Lamar Hunt US Open Cup matches. In those three appearances, the keeper recorded four saves and allowed one goal.
"Diego has an excellent opportunity in South America and we wish him the best in his career," said Independence General Manager Tom Engstrom. "These decisions are never easy, as we carefully weigh the interests of both the club and player. Diego is a quality player as evidenced by his performance in his last game for us. We expect him to have a good future and career."
Since the news of Restrepo's departure broke, three different goalies have come in on trial for Charlotte. The club hopes to fill its backup spot prior to the next match on Sunday, June 7. Other goalkeepers currently on the roster are Colorado Rapids loanee John Berner and amateur Andrew Pannenberg.
The Independence (2-3-3) return to action on Sunday with a match against the Richmond Kickers (5-2-4). This will be the third of four meetings between the two clubs this season. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00pm at City Stadium in Richmond. Fans can watch the match live on YouTube.
