Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Daisuke Matsuzaka looked to be in big-league form during a stellar outing in leading Salem to a 7-2 victory over Winston-Salem in game one of the best-of-five Southern Division championship series on Wednesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Matsuzaka (1-0), who was making his fourth rehab start while recovering from shoulder soreness, tossed 6.2 innings and held the Dash to one run on three hits. He walked a batter and struck out seven to garner the win.

Salem turned to another veteran on the offensive side to plate a pair of runs in the first inning against Dash starting pitcher Justin Edwards. John Hee reached on a one-out walk and Brad Correll, who is a 28-year-old free agent on his fourth Carolina League team, lined a 3-1 offering over the right field wall to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.

The Dash came back with a run in the bottom of the inning as Greg Paiml walked and stole second base. A throwing error by third baseman John Hee on a Salvador Sanchez ground ball left runners on the corners with one out. Brent Morel followed with an RBI single to bring Winston-Salem within a run.

The score remained 2-1 until the top of the sixth inning when the Red Sox pushed a run across. Hee led off with a double and back-to-back one out walks loaded the bases. Tim Federowicz lifted a run-scoring sacrifice fly to right field that put Salem in front 3-1.

Edwards (0-1) was pulled after walking the leadoff man in the seventh. He went six innings and allowed four runs on five hits with four strikeouts. The southpaw also walked four and suffered the loss. Nate Jones took over for Edwards and surrendered consecutive singles, including a run-scoring base hit by Hee that extended the Red Sox lead to 4-1.

The two teams exchanged runs in the eighth with Salem taking advantage of an error by shortstop Greg Paiml that plated an unearned run in top of the inning. Morel added an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame to bring the Dash within 5-2.

Two more Dash errors in the top of the ninth helped the Red Sox score two more runs and put the game away. Ryan Dent opened the inning with a single and another Paiml error put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners into scoring position, Anthony Rizzo hit a slow grounder to first that was tossed away by Seth Loman and allowed both runners to score.

Dash skipper Joe McEwing, who is in his first season a manager, was ejected in the middle of the second inning by third base umpire Matt Benham for arguing would-be double down the third base line that was ruled foul.

The Dash and Red Sox meet up in game two of this best-of-five series on Thursday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Winston-Salem will send RHP Anthony Carter (11-7, 4.36) to the mound, while Salem will counter with RHP Kyle Weiland (7-9, 3.46). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Fans can take advantage of Thirsty Thursday tomorrow night which features discounted beverages including beer for $2 and soda for just $1. Advanced tickets are only $5 and can be purchased by calling 336-714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
