Wilmington Takes Game One

September 9, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg fell 7-1 in the opener of the Northern Division Championship Series on Wednesday night at City Stadium. A pair of costly errors by the Hillcats led to a four-run second inning for the Blue Rocks.

The top of the second would prove to be the unraveling of the Hillcats. Wilmington plated four runs, only one earned thanks to a pair of errors by the Cats defense. Jamar Walton, Anthony Seratelli, Derrick Robinson and Mike Moustakas all had RBI singles in the frame.

It stayed 4-0 until the sixth inning when Jordy Mercer connected on a solo home run to pull Lynchburg within three at 4-1. Mercer hit 10 homers during the regular season and led the team with 83 RBI.

In the ninth inning the Blue Rocks tacked on three more runs to their advantage to put the game away at 9-1. Derrick Robinson singled in another run, Johnny Giavotella doubled home a second run in the frame and Eric Hosmer brought in the third run with a fielder's choice.

Starter Justin Wilson (0-1) took the loss for Lynchburg (0-1) despite the fact that he allowed just one earned run in five innings and struck out nine. The Hillcats have now lost ten in a row to Wilmington and are still looking for their first playoff win since 2002. The win went to starter Eduardo Paulino (1-0) for Wilmington (1-0), who allowed just one run in six and 1/3 innings of work.

The second game of the best of five series takes place on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at City Stadium. Left-hander Rudy Owens (1-1, 3.86) will get the nod for the Hillcats opposite fellow lefty Danny Duffy (9-3, 2.98) for the Blue Rocks.

You can catch all the live action beginning at 6:40 p.m. on FM 105.5 KD Country, 96.9 FM in Roanoke and all the web on kdcountry.com and Lynchburg-hillcats.com.
