Diaz's Diving Stop Wins Save of the Week

September 19, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release

The Republic FC goalkeeper's stunning stop against Orange County on Sep. 9 has been voted by fans as the top save for Week 12

Republic FC goalkeeper Rafael Diaz's diving save against Orange County has won the Fan's Choice Save of the Week after received 69% of the vote from league-wide supporters for Week 12.

The nomination - and the weekly honor itself - was Diaz's second this season after the Sacramento shot stopper won the Week 8 award after receiving 54% of votes from the fans following a double-stop against Reno 1868 FC to help preserve a 1-0 win on August 12.

For the Week 12 accolade, Diaz made a diving stop to his left to deny Orange County striker Darwin Jones an early goal in the opening 45 minutes. Jones fired a low effort on target dipping away from Diaz but the SRFC GK quickly dropped down and made a superb save, brushing the shot away to safety.

Rafa has recorded 19 saves this season manning the net for Mark Briggs' men.

On the 2020 USL Championship campaign, Diaz has helped guide Mark Briggs' men on a current eight-game unbeaten run that's included three straight shutouts in early August. During the current eight game run, the squad has allowed on average less than one goal per game - having conceded just seven goals across eight Championship fixtures.

Diaz and the playoff-bound Indomitable Club's next match is a Sunday night showdown in Sacramento against Tacoma Defiance on September 20. The match will be broadcast locally on KQCA My58 and Estrella TV Sacramento, as well as streamed on ESPN+ with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. PT.
