El Paso Diablos News Release
El Paso, TX - The El Paso Diablos dropped their home finale 2-0 to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains at Cohen Stadium on Thursday night. The game was a very quick game played in just two hours and 12 minutes. It featured just 12 hits between the two teams. El Paso goes just 1-5 on their final home stand of the season.
Both pitchers were spectacular. David Whigham made his first start since June 1 and looked like he has been pitching as a starter the entire season with the way he shut down the Captains. Whigham (2-8) was able to pitch eight innings and allowed just one earned run on five hits, four walks and five strike outs. He was very good at keeping the ball on the infield giving up just one fly ball out. Richard Salazar (10-4) was great in his own right in pitching seven shut-out innings. He allowed just four hits and struck out seven. He too did a great job of keeping the ball on the infield allowing just three fly ball outs. He picked up his fifth win against the Diablos this season.
Neither team had very good opportunities. Shreveport scored one unearned run in the first inning. After a one out walk to Robert Perry, he stole second and went to third on a throwing error. He later came in on a Chris Garcia ground out. The only other run in the game was scored in the fourth inning when Andres Rodriguez doubled and then came in on a Jorge Alvarez single.
El Paso had just six hits in the game. For the second straight game they had no extra base hits. The Diablos end the home stand with just six extra base hits in the six games. Two of those hits came from Rico Santana who went 2-3. El Paso had just two runners get past first base. Rico Santana made it to third with two outs in the fifth inning and Jeff Hulett got to second in the eighth inning. El Paso, which did commit two errors, also showed some fine defense by turning four inning ending double plays. El Paso now will embark on a trip to Wichita where they will finish up the season. Shaun Ellis (8-4, 4.64) will make his final start of the year for the Diablos. First pitch is slated for 6:05. Fans can listen in by tuning to ESPN radio 1380 on online at www.diablos.com.
