Diablos Drop Series Opener, 6-2

Charlie Rudd threw eight quality innings as the St. Paul Saints downed the El Paso Diablos 6-2 in the series opener from Midway Stadium on Monday night.

The Saints struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. Scooter Jordan led off the inning with a double hit to deep right center field. Skip Adams hit a run scoring single up the middle plating Jordan for the 1-0 lead.

St. Paul stretched the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Marcel Longmire led off the frame with a towering home run to deep left field off of Justin Knoff.

The Diablos tied up the game in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Evan Conley smoked a ground towards first which Marcel Longmire couldn't handle and it ricocheted to right field for the error. Logan Wood walked the next at- bat moving Conley to second. The Diablos then had back-to-back RBI singles by Albenis Machado and Jordan Belcher to knot up the game at two.

The Saints took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Adam Olow had a run scoring single in the frame. St. Paul made it a 4-2 advantage in the bottom of the seventh against Garvis Romero. Scooter Jordan led off the frame with a triple. Fernando Valenzuela Jr. came through with a bloop single to left making it a 4-2 lead.

Saint Paul took a commanding four run lead in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch hitter Adam Bourossa stroked a two-run double down the left field line off of Dallas Strankman to make it a 6-2 game.

Charlie Rudd (9-3) threw eight full allowing just one earned run off of six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Justin Knoff (3-1) take the loss, he threw five and a third allowing three earned runs off of eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

The Diablos will take on the St. Paul Saints for the second game of four on Tuesday night at 6:05 PM (MST). Josh Neitz will match up against Brian Whinnery. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1380 AM as well as at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
