St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (August 6, 2007) - The Shawn Wooten project worked out so well that the St. Paul Saints went out and got another veteran catcher trading for Joliet Jackhammer catcher Kevin Sullivan for a player to be named later. They also picked up right-handed reliever Brian Hewitt.
The 29-year-old Sullivan was hitting .226 with three homers and 24 RBI in 40 games with the Jackhammers this season. He played 16 of those 40 games behind the plate. Sullivan threw out 7 of 32 runners (21.9%) and had just two passed balls with a .984 fielding percentage.
Sullivan spent the last three seasons with the Saints rival, the Lincoln Saltdogs. During his previous seven seasons in minor league baseball Sullivan is a .292 hitter with 29 homers and 221 RBI.
He was a 32nd round draft pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2000 June Amateur draft. After signing with the Saltdogs in 2001 his contract was purchased by the Colorado Rockies in 2002 and he reached Triple-A Colorado Springs in 2003 before being released.
The 26-year-old Hewitt has played in three games this season, two with the Sioux City Explorers and one with the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. Hewitt's career began in 2005 with Yuma in the Golden League and he joined the Redhawks later that season. He played for the Redhawks in 2006. He is 3-4 with a 3.79 ERA in 82 appearances during his career. In 118.2 innings he walked 60 and struck out 102.
The Saints released RHP Sean Kramer. He was 1-0 with a 5.52 ERA in 11 games with the Saints. In 14.2 innings he walked six and struck out 16 while opponents hit .302 against him.
The Saints also released catcher Kevin Carlson. He was hitting .116 with two RBI in 16 games. In 43 at bats he had two doubles and scored three runs.
The Saints roster is now at 21 players, 10 pitchers and 11 position players. The Saints can carry a maximum of 22 players.
