St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (August 6, 2007) - For one week the St. Paul Saints will need to go through the South Division if they hope to win the North Division and it started off on the right foot with a 6-2 victory over the El Paso Diablos on Monday night at Midway Stadium in front of 6,026.
After the Saints exhausted their entire bullpen during Sunday afternoon's game the Saints needed a strong start and they got it from Charlie Ruud. He worked his control to near perfection and stifled the Diablos for eight innings. He allowed two unearned runs on six hits while striking out eight and picking up his ninth victory of the season.
The Saints jumped out to the early lead when Scooter Jordan led off the first with a double to right-center and scored on Skip Adams' single to center.
Marcel Longmire made it 2-0 in the fourth on his 12th homer of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall.
With the score tied at two in the sixth Brian Sprout led off with a walk. Sprout had his 14 game hitting streak come to an end gong 0-2 with a walk, hit by pitch and two runs scored. He moved to second on Kevin Sullivan's single and scored on Adam Olow's single over the third baseman's head.
The Saints made it 4-2 in the seventh when Jordan tripled to lead off the inning and scored on Fernando Valenzuela's single. Jordan finished the night 3-4, falling a homer shy of the cycle and scoring two runs.
Adam Bourassa drove in the final two runs with a pinch hit two-run double with the bases loaded in the eighth.
The Saints now have a 3.0 game lead in the North Division over the Sioux City Explorers with 18 games left, 12 at Midway Stadium and six on the road.
The same two teams meet Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints start LHP Brian Whinnery (6-2, 2.53) against Diablos RHP Josh Neitz (6-4, 4.15). The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network and heard on KBGY 107.5 FM. It is "I Heart Rusty" Night presented by the University of Minnesota-Morris. The first 2,500 fans will receive a Rusty Kath Bobblejaw doll.
