Diablos Drop Both Ends Of Doubleheader, See Playoff Hopes Fade

August 27, 2012 - American Association (AA)
El Paso Diablos News Release

LAREDO, TX- After a month and a half of near flawless baseball, the Diablos have hit a rough skid at exactly the wrong time.

El Paso dropped their fifth and sixth straight games as the Wichita Wingnuts took both games of a doubleheader at Lawrence Dumont Stadium, winning game one by a final of 1-0 and game two by a score of 4-1.

Each game ended in gut-wrenching fashion for the Diablos. Right-hander Reyes Dorado (1-4) matched Wingnuts ace Josh Lowey (15-4) pitch for pitch in game one, matching zeros through the first six frames of a shortened seven inning contest (due to league rules.)

El Paso managed just two hits in the contest, however, and Dorado finally relented in the bottom of the final inning. The Wingnuts puts two runners on with two out for Steve Stanley who singled through the middle to give the Wingnuts a 1-0 win. Lowey earned the win, giving him a single-season league record 15 in 2012.

Game two wasn't any easier to stomach. Daniel Nelson's sac fly accounted for the only run of the entire game into the bottom of the sixth as the Diablos entered the frame needing six outs to hold on a badly needed 1-0 victory.

It wasn't to be, as Ramon Garcia (1-5) uncorked a wild pitch with a runner on third to tie the score. Two pitches later, C.J. Ziegler homered over the center field wall to put Wichita out in front 2-1.

The Wingnuts added two more runs off Garcia and James Hoyt recorded a scoreless ninth for the save as the Wingnuts won the nightcap 4-1.

The loss drops the Diablos to 44-49 and six games back of first place Laredo with only seven games left. Each game is a must-win for El Paso for the final seven, starting on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. in game three of the series against Wichita.
