Trenton Devils News Release
Estero, FL, January 27, 2010 - Gerald Coleman kept Florida scoreless through 56 minutes of hockey, and the Devils held on for a 2-1 victory Wednesday at the Germain Arena. Ryan Ginand and Tony Zancanaro were the only two Devils to solve Everblades goalie Barry Brust, who made 35 saves in defeat.
In the first trip to Estero since the 2004-05 Kelly Cup Championship, Trenton skated to a scoreless first period, with both teams exchanging fruitless power plays. Hoping to answer the Everblades' two victories in Trenton earlier this month, the Devils also sought to build on a 6-3 victory against Johnstown last time out. Numerous chances produced by the Devils in the first were denied by Brust, including an opportunity with Matt Vokes crashing the net, but unable to find the back of the net.
Trenton finally broke through halfway through the second period. Starting from the right wing, Ryan Ginand cut toward the circle and then took a sharp left toward the slot, evading defenders and finally shooting across his body and beating Brust on the glove side for a 1-0 Trenton lead. Vokes assisted on Ginand's sixth of the year and third in two games.
The Devils extended their lead four minutes later, on a play started by Dan Eves. Gaining the blue line on the left side, Eves made a creative skating maneuver and passed to Dave Leaderer who stepped toward the goal and fired in stride. Brust made the save, but Zancanaro followed the rebound and steered it past Brust for a 2-0 Trenton lead at 14:23. Zancanaro, who had a solid night winning faceoffs, notched his eleventh goal of the year, as Eves got his twelfth assist and Leaderer his eleventh.
The Devils controlled the pace for much of the third period, as Gerald Coleman continued to fend off an increasingly robust attack from the 'Blades. In a period that generated 13 shots on net, Florida finally broke through with four minutes left in regulation. Mike Bayrack found himself on the weak side of the Devils net with Coleman down and a loose puck just behind him. He quickly reached for the puck with Jeff Prough also reaching for it, nudging it toward the crease where it was redirected across the goal line for the score with 3:46 remaining in the third.
A boost of energy ensued for the Everblades, but Coleman and a sound defense secured the Devils lead. Even when the goalie was pulled for an extra attacker in the final minute, Coleman made a sensational glove save to maintain the lead and Trenton polished off a 2-1 victory.
The Devils (15-19-4-5, 39pts) remain in third place in the East Division, nine points better than Johnstown. Florida (22-16-2-4, 50pts) remains 16 points behind South Division-leading South Carolina. The Devils have two more matchups with Florida this weekend: Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
