Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Stockton, CA - In a Wednesday night contest, the Victoria Salmon Kings visited the Stockton Thunder for the first of a three-game set at the Stockton Arena. Victoria's David Shantz got the start in net, while Stockton gave the nod to Andrew Perugini.
The Thunder hit the scoreboard first at 4:41 when a quick turnaround play in the neutral zone resulted in a 2-on-1 rush. James Bates moved the puck down the right wing and put a saucer pass past the Salmon Kings' defender and onto the stick of Matt Robinson who buried his 11th goal of the season into the open net. Wes Goldie knotted the score at 1-1 on the power play at 11:11 with his team-leading 26th goal of the campaign. A point shot from the left side made its way through traffic in front of Perugini and bounced to Goldie at the right side of the night who buried the puck into an open cage. Chris D'Alvise restored the Thunder's lead with three minutes remaining in the opening period. Off a neutral zone faceoff win, D'Alvise streaked down the left side of the ice into the Salmon Kings' zone and fired a wrist shot from the faceoff circle that beat Shantz' glove into the back of the net. The marker by the Thunder centre was his 16th of the year and gave the home side a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Stockton counted four goals in the second period, including two power play markers, to extend their lead to 6-2. Wes Goldie scored the lone marker of the period for Victoria. The Thunder held a 6-2 advantage through 40 minutes.
Glenn Fisher took over between the pipes for the Salmon Kings to begin the third period, relieving Shantz of his duties for the night. Igor Gongalsky beat Fisher for the Thunders' seventh goal of the game at 4:51. Goldie completed the hat trick for the Salmon Kings at 7:40 with his 28th goal of the season to round out the scoring for the game. Thunder 7 Salmon Kings 3.
Victoria went 1/333.3% on the power play while Stockton was 2/366.7%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Thunder 37-36.
The Salmon Kings and Thunder continue their three-game set with contests on Friday, January 29th, and Saturday, January 30th. Victoria returns home to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre next week to host the Utah Grizzlies in a three-game set with matches on Wednesday, February 3rd, Friday, February 5th, and Saturday, February 6th. Puck drop for all three games versus Utah is 7:05 p.m. Next Friday is the fourth installment of the "Shuffle to Win" contest courtesy of Dave Wheaton GMC and the Times Colonist for a chance to win a brand new Cadillac SRX!
