WORCESTER, Mass. - Alexander Vasyunov scored the game-winner and added two assists to the help the Lowell Devils gather a 3-2 victory over the Worcester Sharks on Wednesday at the DCU Center and take a 1-0 lead in the Atlantic Division Semifinal.
Making their first-ever appearance in the Calder Cup Playoffs, the Devils were unable to pull ahead of the Sharks for good until the 18:33 mark of the second. Nick Palmieri cut out from behind the net and fed the puck to the top of the crease for a wide-open Vasyunov to send past Worcester goalie Alex Stalock and make the score 3-2.
On the other end of the ice, Mike McKenna kept Worcester off the board in the third despite his team being outshot 13-5 in the period. McKenna finished with 34 saves to help the Devils to their first postseason victory in team history.
The Devils' first-ever postseason goal put them up 1-0 with 4:44 left until the first intermission. Nick Palmieri's wraparound attempt was denied by Stalock, but the puck bounced back to Brad Mills who threw a wrist shot into the back of the net.
With Lowell ahead, 1-0, after one, the Sharks picked up their first tally of the postseason and tied the score when Dan DaSilva banked in a power play goal off the pad of McKenna at 8:36 of the second.
Less than two minutes later, Lowell found itself on a 5-on-3 advantage and took back the lead, 2-1, as Ben Walter tapped in the rebound from Matt Taormina's blueline shot.
John McCarthy evened the score once again when his wrister from the far boards weaved its way past the glove of McKenna with five minutes remaining in the second.
