LOWELL, Mass. - Monarchs goalie Jonathan Bernier stopped 34-of-35 shots through overtime and 5-of-5 in the shootout as the Lowell Devils fell to Manchester, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Tsongas Arena.

For just under 55 minutes, the match was an old-fashioned goaltenders duel as both Bernier and Jeff Frazee turned aside shot after shot.

The Monarchs finally broke the scoreless tie at 14:33 of the third when Dave Meckler threw a shot at Frazee from a bad angle that Gabe Gauthier tipped into the top of the net.

That lead would last only 2:05 as Alexander Vasyunov picked up a loose puck behind the net and swooped into the slot before sending a wrister past a screened Bernier. Ryan Murphy and Mark Fraser picked up the assists on Vasyunov's 11th of the season.

After overtime came and went without a goal, the two teams would head to shootout. Both goalies were perfect through the first four rounds, but Trevor Lewis beat Frazee with a deke and a forehand inside the near post.

On the other end of the ice, Bernier denied Jon DiSalvatore's bid to extend the shootout and allowed Manchester to claim the victory.

The Lowell Devils finish their weekend on Sunday, March 1 at 4:00 p.m. on the road versus the Portland Pirates. Listen to the game live on 980AM-WCAP or ahllive.com.
