Eighth-Round Shootout Goal Lifts Phantoms To 4-3 Win Over Providence

February 28, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

PHILADELPHIA - Claude Giroux scored in the eighth round of the shootout and J.S. Aubin stopped the last five shooters he faced to give the Philadelphia Phantoms a thrilling 4-3 shootout win over the Providence Bruins before a season-high 10,277 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum on Saturday night. Patrick Maroon and Jonathan Matsumoto each had a goal and an assist in regulation to help the Phantoms snap a two-game winless streak.

Philadelphia took three one-goal leads over the course of the game, only to see Providence answer each time. Maroon started the scoring 5:05 in when he threw a short-angle shot on Providence goaltender Kevin Regan that snuck over the line by about an inch. But just 34 seconds later, Wacey Rabbit tied the game with a wrist shot that beat Aubin from the slot.

Later in the period, with 7:20 remaining, Jonathon Kalinski put the Phantoms up 2-1 when he took a puck from the right circle, wove into the slot and beat Regan with a wrister on the left side. But the Bruins answered that with 4:52 left in the period on a scramble in front of the Phantoms net that ended with Jordan Knackstedt beating Aubin from the left side of the crease.

The game was knotted at 2-2 until the Phantoms scored on a power play 1:03 into the third period. Matsumoto was out in front when he took a feed from the right corner from Maroon, and he beat Regan inside the left post for a 3-2 lead. It stood for just over seven minutes until Johnny Boychuk's shot from the blue line generated a rebound that Brad Marchand was able to put home, knotting the game at 3-3.

The teams were scoreless through the rest of regulation and overtime, setting the stage for the shootout. The teams continued to trade goals - Providence scored in the first and third rounds, while Philadelphia scored in the second and fourth rounds. The goaltenders then stood tall the rest of the way until Giroux fired a puck through Regan in round 8, opposite Aubin's fifth consecutive save.

Aubin earned the win with 31 saves in regulation and six of eight in the shootout, while Regan took the loss despite 36 saves in regulation and five of eight in the extra session.

The Phantoms return to the ice on Wednesday night in a rescheduled game against the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 at the Wachovia Center.
