Albany Devils News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Ben Simon and Mathieu Roy each notched a goal and two assists as the Lowell Devils fell to the Springfield Falcons, 5-2, at the MassMutual Center on Saturday.

As was the case the previous night versus the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Devils were unable to put the puck into the net despite numerous chances on the man-advantage. Lowell went 0-for-7 on the power play and was unable to stop a Springfield special teams unit that was converting at 53.8% in head-to-head play this season.

With his team already up 2-0 going into the second period, Simon picked up a power play goal at 1:36 when he fired Rob Schremp's feed past goalie Frank Doyle. It took only another 1:04 for the Falcons to make the score 4-0 as Craig McDonald slung a turnaround shot from the far wall that trickled across the goal line.

Petr Vrana got Lowell on the board at 8:22 of the middle period as some quick passing freed him up in the slot for a wrist shot over the glove of Jeff Deslauriers. Lowell closed the gap even further 3:45 into the final frame when Olli Malmivaara batted a loose puck past the Falcons goalie for a power play tally that made the score 4-2.

The Devils looked to get the early lead after Springfield's Tim Sestitio went to the penalty box for hooking, but instead found themselves down 1-0 after giving up their second shorthanded goal this year. After a Lowell turnover at center ice, Simon tried to sneak a shot through the five-hole of Doyle, but the goalie left a rebound for Jean-Francoise Jacques to bang home at 2:33.

Simon also had a hand as the Falcons extended their lead to 2-0 as he provided the second assist on a Schremp one-timer from the near circle that went high corner with 4:33 until the first intermission.

Roy completed the scoring with an empty-netter with 49 seconds left in regulation. Doyle made 16 saves in the loss.
