Mt. Pleasant, SC - After waiting out a three-hour weather delay, Detroit City FC and the Charleston Battery played a tough and hard-fought 90' that saw the points shared at Patriot's Point in a 0-0 draw on Wednesday evening.
With the kickoff moving to 10:30, Detroit City FC came out of the gates hot in their first match in ten days, doing well to get the fullbacks involved in advanced attacking positions. This was on full display with spells of positive early play through Rhys Williams and Oniel Fisher Jr. on the flanks. Early on, though, Williams would find himself in foul trouble, collecting a yellow card just 15 minutes into the match.
This aforementioned hot start would culminate in two dangerous attacking opportunities for Detroit City FC in minutes 11 and 23. In the 11th minute, clever buildup play from Oniel Fisher Jr. and Ben Morris saw the ball end up at the feet of Connor Rutz who saw his shot saved by Charleston's Trey Muse.
Then, just 12 minutes later in the 23rd minute, forward Skage Simonsen found himself with time and space on the ball and would play a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Ben Morris who was denied by a fantastic save out of Muse yet again.
The leaders of the Eastern Conference would bounce back well from these chances and began to take the match to Le Rouge as the first half came to an end and nearly found the breakthrough twice in two minutes with two chances from the usually lethal Augustine Williams.
The second half was more tame than the first with the first chance of note coming in the 68th minute when a tricky attacking move from Charleston resulted in a powerful shot that required an impressive save from Nate Steinwascher in frame for Detroit City FC.
Five minutes prior to the save, newly acquired forward Dario Suarez came on to make his Detroit City FC debut, playing 26 minutes and completing 100% of his passes (4/4).
The last chance of the match for Le Rouge would fall to the feet of Maxi Rodriguez, who latched onto a loose ball in the midfield and picked out an onrushing Skage Simonsen who saw his strike blocked in route to the goal.
The match would end by a score of 0-0, it was Detroit City FC's third match unbeaten in a row and also the third clean sheet in a row for Le Rouge. They will next take the pitch in a week, on the road to Hartford Athletic on 6/14.
