
Destroyers add five to active roster

COLUMBUS, OH â The Columbus Destroyers of the Arena Football League added five players to their active roster, the team announced today. The Destroyers have come to terms with fullback/linebacker Kelron Sykes, quarterback Tom Jones, wide receiver/defensive back Deforest Hart, and offensive/defensive linemen Carey Clayton and Kenny Jackson.
Sykes comes to the Destroyers after spending part of the 2003 season as a member of the Carolina Cobras practice squad. Prior to joining the Cobras, Jackson appeared in two games with the Georgia Force in 2002 and appeared in seven games with the Los Angles Avengers in 2001. He also spent time with the Greensboro Prowlers of arenafootball2 following his stint with Carolina.
Jones enters the professional ranks after a four-year playing career at Indiana University (1999-2002). As a senior in 2002, Jones split time at the quarterback position with fellow senior Gibran Hamdan where he finished the season having completed 75-of-152 pass attempts for 879 yards and eight touchdowns.
Hart joins the Destroyers after a successful collegiate career at Delta State (MS), lining up as a slot receiver from 1999-2000. He won a Division II National Championship with Delta State in 2000. Hart transferred to Delta State after spending two years at Hinds Community College (MS) from 1997-98.
Clayton joins the Destroyers after stints with four different NFL teams. Clayton was in training camp with the Houston Texans before being released prior to the 2003 season. He was originally signed by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent on May 18, 2001 before spending time with the San Francisco 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Texans. Clayton was a four-year starter at Texas El-Paso, earning Second-Team All-Western Athletic Conference honors as a senior and First-Team honors as a junior.
Jackson was in training camp with the NFL's Detroit Lions in 2002 after joining the team as an undrafted free agent. He played in five games for the Memphis Xplorers of arenafootball2 in 2003, finishing with three sacks and three tackles for loss to go along with two fumble recoveries. Jackson played two seasons at Ole Miss (2000-01) and was one of the top tacklers among linemen in the SEC as a senior, collecting 89 tackles, including four tackles for loss and two sacks.
The team has also released eight players, including offensive specialist Reggie Germany, fullback/linebacker Juan Long, wide receiver/defensive backs Chuck Wesley and Mel Miller Jr., and offensive/defensive linemen Nick Anderson, Jeremy Johnson, Bill Gassen and Ljubomir Stamenich. In addition, offensive/defensive lineman Bill Borchers voluntarily left camp.
The Columbus Destroyers kick off the 2004 season Saturday, February 7 at Indiana followed by the inaugural home opener Friday, February 13 hosting Carolina.
