SAINT JOHN, NB --- The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League announced today that Saint John Sea Dogs defenseman Simon Després has been named the TELUS Defensive Player of the Week for the period of November 10-16.

Després, 17, registered 1G-5A-6P over the course of three games played this past week - all road wins for the Sea Dogs (15-9-1-1). The 17-year old blue-liner has tallied 1G-13A-14P in 26 games played this season to goal along with a +5 rating - the best +/- total of any defenseman on Saint John.

Originally selected by the Sea Dogs in the first round (first overall) of the 2007 QMJHL Entry Draft, Després was a member of the QMJHL All-Rookie Team last season after finishing his freshman major junior campaign with 1G-13A-14P in 64GP. A native of Laval, QC, Després won a gold medal with Team Canada at last summer's Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Europe.

The league also announced today that Yannick Riendeau of the Drummondville Voltigeurs has been named the TELUS QMJHL Offensive Player of the Week after registering 3G-4A-7P in three games played.

Després will be in the line-up for Team QMJHL in the opening game of the 2008 ADT Canada-Russia Challenge tonight in Sydney, NS. Game Two of the six-game series will be played on Wednesday night (7:00pm) at Saint John's Harbour Station. Fewer than 600 tickets remain available for the prestigious international contest, which will also feature Sea Dogs players Alex Grant, Yann Sauvé, and Steven Anthony.
