Jacksonville Sharks News Release
JACKSONVILLE - The Arena Football League announced Monday that Jacksonville Sharks defensive lineman Derrick Summers has been placed on the "Other League Exempt" list. Summers has signed a one-year contract with the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts.
Summers will head north of the border with a chance to continue the strong start to his professional career. As an AFL rookie in 2011, Summers led the Sharks and finished third in the entire AFL with 11 sacks. He also led his team with 12 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles, also tying for the team lead with three fumble recoveries.
This season, Summers appeared in six of the Sharks' first eight games, recording 10.5 total tackles (8 solo), two tackles for loss and two sacks. Through Week 10, that sack total puts Summers third on the team. He also forced a fumble and recovered another this season.
Before beginning his professional career, the 23-year-old Summers played collegiately at the University of Toledo from 2006-09. In his four seasons as a Rocket, Summers spent time at linebacker, defensive end and nose tackle, registering a total of 135 tackles and five sacks. Summers is a native of Southfield, Michigan.
Because the Sharks did not announce a corresponding transaction Monday, the team's active roster currently consists of 23 players.
