Denver Outlaws News Release
DENVER - The Denver Outlaws (1-2) held off a late New York Lizard's (1-2) fourth-quarter rally, winning 16-12 and earning their first victory of the season in the team's home opener on Friday.
With the victory, the Outlaws improved to 11-1 all-time in season openers and remain undefeated (11-0) at home all-time against the Lizards. New York had previously defeated Denver 19-15 in the teams' first game of the season.
Attackman Matt Kavanagh, who has been the team's leading scorer in all three games this season, paced the team with five goals (6 points). Attackman Eric Law contributed six points (4 goals, 2 assists), while attackman Shawn Evans added two goals and three assists in his Outlaws debut.
Goalie Jack Kelly had his best game of the season in net and held the Lizards to five first-half goals, stopping 11-of-16 shots (68.8 pct.) he faced in the opening stanza. Midfielder Tom Kelly won 61.2 percent (19-of-31) of his faceoffs attempts and added a game-high seven ground balls.
Law opened the scoring 3:54 into the game, but the Outlaws trailed 4-3 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was also low scoring as Denver took a 6-5 lead into the halftime break behind a pair of goals from Kavanagh and a strong effort from Jack Kelly.
The Outlaws offense opened up the second half with a 5-0 scoring run that was highlighted by a two-point goal from midfielder Romar Dennis, the team's first two-point tally this season. The Lizards scored two goals of their own in the latter half of the third quarter, but Kavanagh's fourth tally with five seconds left in the quarter boosted Denver's lead to 12-7.
New York responded with four consecutive goals to open the fourth quarter and cut Denver's lead to 12-11 before midfielder Cam Milligan's goal at 7:23 put the Outlaws back up by two. Kavanagh scored his fifth of the game to increase Denver's lead to 14-11. The two teams traded late goals to provide the final 16-12 margin.
The Outlaws have a quick turnaround as they travel to Florida to play the launch on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET.
