Delmarva Shorebirds Game Notes

July 23, 2022 - Carolina League (CarL)
Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

LAST TIME OUT: Coming out of the All-Star break, the 'Birds played a 10-inning thriller but lost 8-6 to the FredNats Friday night. The 'Birds rallied in the middle frames to take a 4-1 lead before the FredNats scored four in the eighth to take the lead. The 'Birds answered with one in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game and force extras where a three-run tenth iced the game for the FredNats. Reed Trimble went 2-for-4 in his return to Delmarva while Cristopher Cespedes went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Miguel Padilla went 4+ frames out of the 'pen, allow- ing two runs and striking out a season high six.

TODAY'S OPPONENT: Pablo Aldonis goes Saturday night for the FredNats. Aldonis made his FredNats debut on July 17, firing five shutout innings at Augusta to earn the win. He struck out six and walked two while giving up two hits. Signed in 2019 as an INTL FA by the Nats, he finally debuted this season in the FCL where he went 1-2 with a 4.39 ERA in 26.2 innings, striking out 33 and walking just five.

REED RETURNS: Following off-season shoulder surgery, Reed Trimble returned to Delmarva Friday night, going 2-for-4 in his return to Salisbury. Trimble was the Orioles Competitive Round B selection out of the University of Southern Mississippi and is considered a top-20 prospect in the Orioles system. Trimble slashed .169/.276/.185 in 16 games with the 'Birds last year.

LONG STAY: Ryan Long went a career high long six innings last Friday night, capturing his first career Quality Start. Over his past two out- ings, Long has gone 11 frames, allowing just one run on six hits, walking four and striking out 12, with opponents just .158 against him.

RINGING ROBBIE: Roberto Martinez came into the last seris with Carolina having hit just two doubles on the season, but has now pounded out seven on the season after hitting five during the series in five games played (8-for-21). Martinez has found his power stroke after enduring an 0-for-14 stretch prior to this series.

CRUZING ALONG: Although still just 18, Deivy Cruz has made an instant impression in Single-A. The lefty has a 1.33 ERA in 20.1 innings, allowing just 14 hits while striking out 26. The performance has started to turn heads, with Cruz now checking in at No. 27 on Baseball America's top-30 Orioles prospects.

BY THE SKIN OF THEIR TEETH: The 'Birds won their second series of the year against Salem, July 4-10, albeit barely. Three of the four wins were walk-off winners and each victory came by just one run. Twice, the 'Birds blew ninth inning leads (one run and four runs) and two of their three walk-offs didn't even require hits (fielder's choice and walk). All four walk-off wins this year for Delmarva have come against Salem.

WE HARDLY KNEW YA, HESTON: It took two years for Heston Kjerstad to begin his professional career, but just 22 games to master the Carolina League. Kjerstad was promoted to High-A Aberdeen on July 12 after slashing a ridiculous .463/.551/.650 with nine doubles, two homers, and 17 driven in. He accumulated 13 multi-hit games and was held without a hit just twice while reaching base in every game but one.

FRESH ARMS: The Shorebirds have remade their starting rotation with names like Miguel Padilla, Deivy Cruz, and Edgar Portes making their Single-A debuts in prominent starting roles. The trio have combined to post 65.1 innings through their first nine outings, allowing just 25 earned runs (3.44 ERA).

FREDDY BASE KNOCKS: All Frederick Bencosme has done since join the 'Birds is pile up the hits. He is 44-for-121 (.364) for the 'Birds, having piled up 13 multi-hit games in just 33 games played. Bencosme is still just 19 and has barely played stateside, having spent all of 2021 in the DSL. Bencosme hit his first 'Birds homer July 12 against the Mudcats.

RUN, LUIS, RUN: MLB.com recently crowned Valdez the fastest player in the O's system, and that's been bearing fruit on the bases. Valdez leads the league with 45 stolen bases and ranks sixth in the entirety of the minors. This comes after Valdez failed to steal a base in his first nine games this season. Valdez tied a franchise record by swiping four bases in game in game one of a doubleheader July 10 against the Red Sox.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT: Although save opportunites have been few and far between for the 'Birds this season, when they have needed to close down a win, Preston Price has been money. The righty is 5-for-6 in save opportunites, tying him for the fourth most saves in the Carolina league.

TIDE, RISEN: The Orioles front office's meticulous approach in the recent rebuild has started to bear fruit, as the Orioles minor league system was named the No. 1 farm system in base- ball for the second consecutive ranking by MLB Pipeline. Current top-30 O's prospects on the 'Birds roster per MLB Pipeline are: No. 21 Reed Trimble, No. 27 Carter Baumler, and No. 30 Anthony Servideo.
