
Delmarva Defeats Legends in Extra Innings on Opening Night

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) - The defending South Atlantic League champions, Lexington Legends, fell in extra innings to the Delmarva Shorebirds on Opening Night, 6-5.
Lexington was first to strike in the bottom of the third inning. Freddy Fermin singled to right field then swiped second base. Michael Gigliotti smacked an RBI double to left field, and the Legends led 1-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, Nick Horvath drew a one-out walk then stole second base. Seamus Curran singled him home, tying the game 1-1. Curran then moved to second when Doran Turchin was hit by a pitch. With runners at first and second, Branden Becker drew a walk and loaded the bases. Adam Hall grounded into a fielder's choice, but Curran was able to score and the Shorebirds led 2-1.
The Legends answered in the bottom of the fourth inning when Chase Vallot blasted a 413ft home run to left field to tie the game, 2-2.
In the top of the sixth inning, Curran was hit by a pitch. Turchin then smashed an RBI triple to deep left centerfield to put Delmarva up 3-2.
Horvath led off with a double in the eighth inning. Turchin continued his hot night at the plate and brought home Horvath with an RBI single and Delmarva led 4-2.
The Legends continued to fight back in the bottom of the eighth inning. Michael Gigliotti led off with a single to right field. He then stole second base and went on to swipe third as well. Vallot hit a deep triple to right field, scoring Gigliotti and bringing the Legends within one run. Reed Rohlman deposited a single to left field, scoring Vallot and the game was tied again, 4-4.
In the top of the tenth inning, JC Encarnacion hit a two-run homer down the left field line putting Delmarva ahead 6-4.
In the bottom of the inning, Rubendy Jaquez was placed at second base as the pace of play runner. Nathan Eaton then hit an RBI double into right field, scoring Jaquez and pulling the Legends within one. Despite loading the bases, the Legends were unable to move another run across and they fell 6-5.
Tim Naughton earned the win for the Shorebirds, tossing the final 2.0 innings allowing one run on one hit while walking one and striking out five. Kyle Hinton was given the loss pitching 2.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit while striking out five.
Lexington and Delmarva face off again tomorrow, April 5 at 7:05pm at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. The Legends will be debuting their Copa de la Diversion identity as 'Las Leyendas' featuring jerseys, hats, and merchandise. Former Kentucky Wildcat, LHP Zach Haake will be on the mound for the Legends and RHP Grayson Rodriguez will pitch for Delmarva.
