Gateway Grizzlies News Release
The Gateway Grizzlies and River City Rascals played a game that mirrored Thursday night's game. The Grizzlies scored two in the ninth to tie the game, then won the contest in extra innings. For the second night in a row it was Brandon Averill that came through with the hit to win it for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies improve to 24-28 with the win. River City drops to 29-23 with the loss.
Scott Patterson (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Grizzlies. Patterson threw the final two innings, allowing a hit. He struck out four. Marcus Barriger pitched two scoreless innings in relief. He struck out four. Brandon Smith started and went seven innings. He struck out five.
For the second time it was the bottom of the lineup that came through for the Grizzlies late in the game. Gary Gilbert, Ryan Sullivan and Freddy Lopez came up with big hits to help tie the game in the ninth. It was Sullivan who scored the game winner, with Averill coming through in extras again.
Sullivan was 3-5 with the RBI in the ninth and three runs scored. Lopez was 2-5 with the RBI. Averill was 1-5 with the game winner. Shawn Smarsh and two hits and RBI for the Grizzlies. Jimmy Retier had a pair of hits as well.
Jon Kars (2-1) took the loss in relief for the Rascals. He pitched two innings, allowing the one run on three hits.
The Grizzlies will go for the sweep Saturday night, but face a tough task. The will face Rascals' ace Aaron Ledbetter (9-0). Nick Szczur (3-2) will go for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
