Defenseman of the Year Joins Rush

Rapid City Rush inks deal with team's first defenseman Jamie VanderVeeken. VanderVeeken joins the Rush after completing his first professional season with the Kalamazoo Wings of the International Hockey League (IHL).

"I've heard nothing but good things about the Rush organization and can't wait to arrive in Rapid City," VanderVeeken said. "I am excited to begin the season; it is my first in the CHL and my first being a member of an expansion team."

Prior to starting his professional hockey career with the K-Wings, the native of Sarnia, Ontario played four years in Junior "A" hockey, primarily in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). During the 2005-06 Season, VanderVeeken helped the London Knights to a second place finish in the Memorial Cup.

"Coach Joe Ferras and his coaching staff are very determined on putting together a winning team, knowing that made my decision much easier," said VanderVeeken.

VanderVeeken scored his first pro goal October 26, 2007 against Flint. He was honored twice by the IHL as its Aquafina Rookie of the Week, and in March VanderVeeken was named the Pepsi Defenseman of the Month by the IHL.

"I was able to watch Jamie play half a dozen times last season and every game he was an impact player," said Coach Ferras. "Jamie skates very well and plays with an edge and will be leaned on heavily in the upcoming Inaugural Rush Season."

VanderVeeken went on to receive further honors during his first pro season and on April 12th received the K-Wings Centennial Wireless Rookie and Fifth-Third Bank Defenseman of the Year Awards. He finished out his pro season by being selected to the IHL's All-Star Rookie Team.

"With Jamie entering his second year as a professional hockey league player I'm looking for him to give us an offensive boost on the backend and build off the great season he had last year," said Ferras.

During his first professional hockey season, VanderVeeken dressed in over 73 games, scored 14 goals and earned 19 assists amassing a total of 33 points as a rookie.

"As a coach I am excited to have young talented players that love the game and love to compete every night and Jamie fits this mold; he will become an instant fan favorite for the Rush faithful," said Rush Head Coach Joe Ferras.

Also signed are player-assistant Chris Lipsett, 34, most recently with the Amarillo Gorillas, forwards Stephen Cooke, 24, of Stirling, Ontario, Brady Olsen, 24, of Enterprise, Ontario, and goalies Lanny Ramage, 25, of Baldur, Manitoba and Miguel Beaudry, 26, of Verner, Ontario.
