Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - Six errors sent the Lansing Lugnuts to their doom Thursday night in a 7-3 loss to the Fort Wayne Wizards before 8,571 fans at Oldsmobile Park.
Holding a 1-0 lead in the third, Fort Wayne took advantage of an error and two wild pitches to extend their lead to 4-0. Andy Parrino was at third base with two outs before coming home when Lance Zawadzki reached on a throwing error by Lansing third baseman Kevin Ahrens. Zawadzki moved to second on Chi-Hung Cheng's wild pitch and scored on Justin Baum's single, pushing the lead to 3-0. Another wild pitch moved Baum up to second, where he later scored on an Adam Zornes single to cap the inning at 4-0.
Cheng (5-8), who took the loss, would be done after just three innings. He gave up four runs on five hits, but none of the runs were earned.
Lansing scored once in the fourth, getting on the board at 4-1, before Fort Wayne plated three more in the fifth.
Brad Chalk doubled and scored when Ahrens dropped a throw to third on a fielder's choice. The ball got past him and allowed Chalk to come home, extending the lead to 5-1. Zawadzki's RBI single into center field brought Luis Martinez home, making it a 6-1 game. Zawadzki moved to second base on the same play on Darin Mastroianni's fielding error and later scored when C.J. Ebarb's throw to third on a stolen base attempt sailed into left field.
Only one of the seven runs that Lansing allowed was earned to the Lugnuts' pitching staff.
Jeremy Hefner (10-5) pitched well for the Wizards, as he gave up one run on two hits over six innings.
Lansing did score twice in the seventh, but Jackson Quezada shut the door in the ninth to seal the win for Fort Wayne.
Lansing (71-58, 32-27) and Fort Wayne (66-63, 29-30) will continue the eight-game stretch against each other Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
Friday is Lugnuts Charities Night presented by Dan Henry Distributing featuring the Lugnuts Jersey Auction benefitting the United Way. LAFCU Fireworks will also follow the game.
