Starting a veteran goalie, a pair of defensemen with over four combined years of USHL experience, and three rookie forwards, the Waterloo Black Hawks got the kind of final score they were looking for in their first preseason test Tuesday at Young Arena against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

The six-round shootout decision even went in their favor, as first-year Black Hawk Aaron Pearce notched the lone marker of the extra session for a 2-1 final. Pearce rifled a low shot from between the rings past the stick side of Brady Hjelle. Meanwhilewhile Black Hawk goaltender C.J. Motte stopped the RoughRiders on six shootout attempts, plus 24 of 25 chances during regulation.

Cedar Rapids struck for the first goal of the night while both teams were shorthanded at 10:58 of the second period. Teemu Aarnio redirected a fluttering, knee-high puck during a four-on-three power play. The Black Hawks rallied to tie the game during the final minute of the middle frame.

Mike Montagna found the puck and an open side with 47.8 seconds remaining after Luke Hannon's initial shot trickled free.

Typically slow starters on special teams, the Black Hawks turned in a solid penalty-killing effort, dodging seven of eight RoughRider power plays, including 52 total seconds of five-on-three time in two separate situations.

The Black Hawk take to the road for their next preseason game on Friday evening in Des Moines against the Buccaneers. Waterloo comes back to the Young Arena ice Saturday to host the Sioux City Musketeers at 7:05.
