Defending Champs Vancouver Whitecaps FC Visit York United FC in Canadian Championship Quarterfinals
April 19, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - It's a rematch as the 'Caps look to run it back.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC will be on the road to open defence of the Voyageurs Cup, playing at Canadian Premier League (CPL) club York United FC between May 9 to 11. Date and time will be confirmed in the coming days.
The match will be available to watch live on OneSoccer, fuboTV, and TELUS Optik TV channel 980, as well as on AM 730 radio.
Whitecaps FC, the defending Voyageurs Cup holders, received a bye to the quarterfinals. The 'Caps defeated Toronto FC in the 2022 Canadian Championship final in front of a Vancouver tournament record crowd of 24,307. The championship also earned Vancouver their third all-time berth into the Concacaf Champions League, where they made it to the quarterfinals earlier this year.
York United FC advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating CPL newcomers Vancouver FC 1-0 at York Lions Stadium on Wednesday night.
This quarterfinal is a rematch of the 2022 Canadian Championship semifinals, where the 'Caps secured their trip to the final with a 2-1 victory over The Nine Strips at BC Place.
York features several Whitecaps FC connections, including head coach Martin Nash who is a former captain with the 'Caps and made 285 appearances for the club. Midfielders Elijah Adekugbe and Matthew Baldisimo, and forward Theo Afework all spent time developing in the Whitecaps FC BMO MLS Academy. Goalkeeper Nikolaos Giantsopoulos also spent an emergency short-term MLS loan with Whitecaps FC in May of the 2022 season.
The winner of this matchup will advance to the semifinals, where they will play on the road between May 23 to 25 at the winner of Pacific FC/Cavalry FC vs. TSS FC Rovers/Valour FC. Should Whitecaps FC advance to the final, the 'Caps will host the championship match at BC Place between June 6 to 8.
All Canadian Championship home matches are included for Whitecaps FC season ticket members.
The Voyageurs Cup has been awarded to the Canadian Championship winner since 2008. Created by the Voyageurs Canadian Supporters group, the trophy represents Canadian fans' commitment to the game in Canada. At the completion of the competition, the tournament MVP is named as the George Gross Memorial Trophy Award winner (2022, Ryan Gauld). The Young Canadian Player Award is presented to the best Canadian player in the competition 23 years of age or under (2022, Ryan Raposo).
