Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders had a lead in Tuesday night's game against the Bowie Baysox for a brief moment until the wheels fell off in the sixth inning as they dropped the second game of the series, 7-3.

Bowie jumped out in front of the Defenders in the first as Kennard Jones scored on a 4-6-3 double play to claim a 1-0 lead.

A scoreless second made way for an eventful home half of the third. Eddy Martinez-Esteve led off with a walk, Olmo Rosario singled and Ben Copeland laid down a sacrifice bunt down the third base line that starting pitcher David Berken threw six feet over first baseman Ryan Finan's head. Martinez-Esteve and Rosario scored on the miscue as Travis Denker singled home Copeland to give the Defenders a 3-1 advantage.

Bowie got one back in the top of the fourth on an RBI double off the bat of Sebastien Boucher to make for an uncomfortable 3-2 lead for Connecticut.

After a scoreless fifth, the top of the sixth proved to be enduring. Joey Martinez retired the first two men he faced as the inning looked to be well in hand. But Ben Davis singled, Nolan Reimold singled and Boucher walked to load the bags with two outs. Then, on a 1-2 count and Osiris Matos in on relief Jonathan Tucker hit a fly ball behind the plate. Catcher Adam Witter settled underneath it but could not make the play as the inning was extended. On the following pitch, Jonathan Tucker hit a bouncing ball through the defense to bring in two men until Dave Maroul cut the ball off and tried to retire Tucker at second but the ball shot into the outfield and another run came in to score as Bowie claimed a 5-3 lead.

Bowie added two more in the seventh on a two-run double to the gap off the bat of Ben Davis to extend the lead which would prove to be the final, 7-3.

The Defenders will face off against the Baysox for a final time at home on Wednesday at 6:35pm. Tickets are still available at ctdefenders.com or by dialing the box office at (860) 887-7962.
