SALEM, VA (AUGUST 22, 2011) - Salem notched three runs in the sixth inning to overturn a two-run deficit and pulled away late en route to a 6-3 win over the Dash on Monday night at LewisGale Field. Winston-Salem remained 0.5 games behind Kinston for first place in the Southern Division, however, as the Indians lost 2-0 in Frederick.
The Red Sox (25-32, 56-70) drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning against Matt Wickswat, who surrendered a leadoff double to Shannon Wilkerson. Kolbrin Vitek brought him homeward with a single to right field, giving Salem a 1-0 lead.
Drake Britton could not hold the lead for the Red Sox, giving up two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Juan Silverio walked and got to third base on a double by Ian Gac. Two batters later, Mike Blanke tied the game at one with an RBI single and Kyle Colligan gave Winston its first lead with a run-scoring base hit to score Gac.
The Dash (30-27, 62-65) added another run in the fifth inning when Gac's shallow pop-up to right field fell between two Red Sox players, scoring Tyler Saladino from third.
The sixth inning did not start well for Wickswat (5-5). He walked leadoff batter Heiker Meneses, Vitek singled, and Bryce Brentz hit an RBI single to narrow the deficit to 3-2. Wickswat struck out the next batter and was then relieved by Justin Cassel, who retired the first man he faced on a ground ball that moved both runners into scoring position.
Peter Hissey then bounced a 1-1 pitch up the middle, where Saladino fielded the ball behind second base. In his haste to throw out the speedy Hissey, Saladino's throw skipped in the dirt off Andy Wilkins' glove and both runners scored to give Salem the lead. Hissey was awarded an RBI single, with the second run scoring on Saladino's throwing error.
While Red Sox reliever Jeremiah Bayer mowed down Dash batters, the Salem offense picked up some insurance in the eighth inning. With one out, the Red Sox loaded the bases on a walk, a single, and an error. Shannon Wilkerson brought in one run with a sacrifice fly and another man scored on Josue Peley's single to right field to give Salem a three-run lead.
Saladino tripled with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Jared Mitchell followed with a strikeout to end the game. Bayer (7-2) pitched the last four innings to earn the win, allowing only two hits.
Wickswat suffered his fourth consecutive loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks over 5.1 innings.
Saladino was 2 for 4 with a walk, marking the sixth straight game that he has had at least two hits. The reigning Carolina League Player of the Week hit his fourth triple in the last four games and is batting .613 since last Monday.
The series continues on Tuesday night when RHP Cameron Bayne (11-6, 3.40) opposes RHP Anthony Ranaudo (4-5, 4.76). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with the audio broadcast beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for their final home stand of the 2011 regular season on Friday, August 26. Winston-Salem will host Myrtle Beach in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. Fans may purchase tickets for every game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com.
