Dean "Scooter" Vrooman Announces Retirement

May 31, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

After a 32-year career with the Portland Winterhawks, Dean "Scooter" Vrooman has announced that he is retiring. Vrooman's final day with the Winterhawks will be Friday, May 31st.

"Overall, I have been a part of the organization for 32 years and I am going to be 66 years old in December so I thought this was the right time to move out of the realm of working full time in corporate sponsorships. I absolutely love the team and the WHL and will still be coming to a lot of games, perhaps helping out with some broadcasting occasionally, and working with the Winterhawks alumni and other isolated projects as they arise. I am so fortunate to have worked with so many great people, players, sponsors and fans for so many years. It has been a lot of work, but it has also been a lot of fun."

Vrooman originally joined the Portland Winter Hawks in 1982 as the team's play-by-play announcer and primary sponsorship salesperson for 25 years. In 2007, Vrooman briefly left the Winterhawks for a position in the banking industry before returning to the team as Director of Corporate Partnerships in 2012.

During his tenure, Vrooman broadcasted over 2,000 games and traveled nearly a million miles throughout the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada. He called some of the most-memorable games in team history including the 1983 and 1998 Memorial Cup Championships.

"We're excited about Scooter's retirement, but it's not going to be the same without him around the office every day," Winterhawks Team President Doug Piper said. "He has meant so much to this team, to our fans, and to the sport of hockey in this region. We are fortunate that Scooter will continue to be involved with our organization through a handful of projects and we will be honoring him with a special game night to recognize all of his contributions during the upcoming 2019-20 season."
