Dean fans in 10 in victory

BURLINGTON, VT --- PJ Dean struckout 10 batters in six scoreless innings to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 6-0 victory over the Auburn Doubledays and earn a split of the doubleheader after Auburn took game one 3-1 in New York-Penn League action Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

Dean (3-0) came out firing as he struckout the side in both the first and third innings, while 10 of the first 13 outs he recorded were by the strikeout. He ended up allowing five hits with no walks in his six innings and lowered his ERA to 0.49 for the season. The 10 strikeouts were the most for a Lake Monsters pitcher since Nick Long struckout 10 Jamestown Jammers at Centennial on August 9, 2003.

Vermont scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning as Michael Guerrero hit a two-run homer for his seventh home run of the season, while Yuerys Tejada had an RBI single and Ricky Nolan an RBI groundout for a 4-0 lead. Tyler Moore had an RBI double in the fourth as the Lake Monsters scored twice to increase its lead to six.

Carlos Peralta got into a bit of a jam in the seventh with runners on first and third with one out, but he struckout Leance Soto and Chris House to end the game and give Vermont pitching staff its second shutout victory of the season.

Jake Smolinski, the Washington Nationals second-round selection in the 2007 draft, went 1-for-3 with two runs in his first game with the Lake Monsters after being promoted from the Gulf Coast League Nationals.

The highlight of game two for Auburn came in the fifth inning when the Doubledays turned a triple play. With runners on first and second, Nick Arata lined a ball to right field that Bartolo Nicolas made a diving catch of. Nicolas got up and threw to first base to double Nolan off first base and then first baseman Adam Amar completed the triple play by throwing to second base to triple off Tejeda.

Auburn took game one of the twinbill as starter Marcus Walden (2-3) allowed one run on two hits over five innings and the Doubledays got a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning on a James Keithley throwing error for a 3-0 lead.

Vermont's only run of the opener came in the fourth inning on a solo home run from Derek Norris, his seventh home run of the season. The home runs Monday for Norris and Guerrero give the Lake Monsters a total of 36 home runs for the season.

Vermont (22-29) has now won three of its last five games following an eight-game losing streak. The Lake Monsters continue their six-game homestand with the first of a three-game series against the Aberdeen Ironbirds on Tuesday at Centennial Field beginning at 7:05 p.m.
