Mississippi Braves News Release
CHATTANOOGA, TN - Luis De Avila pitched five no-hit innings, and the Mississippi Braves (40-42, 7-7) pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout to salvage the series finale 8-0 over the Chattanooga Lookouts (46-37, 8-7) on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Field.
The M-Braves combined for a two-hit shutout and carried a no-hit bid two outs into the seventh inning. Hudson Potts broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the seventh, and the homer sparked a four-run inning, one of two scoring frames in the game.
De Avila dominated over five innings. The left-hander allowed three walks and no hits with six strikeouts. He lowered to a 3.28 ERA in 74 innings for the M-Braves. His ERA is top five in the Southern League.
Neither team scored until the seventh when Potts broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run to left field, his sixth long ball of the season. The homer sparked a four-run seventh. Luke Waddell hit an RBI single in the inning, and an error helped bring in another run.
Victor Vodnik followed De Avila with 1 2/3 shutout innings. Vodnik gave up a hit with two outs in the seventh to end the no-hit bid.
Kyle Wilcox pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. In 19 relief appearances for the M-Braves, Wilcox has allowed just two runs in 22 innings.
Leading 4-0 after eight innings, the M-Braves added four more runs in the ninth. Waddell hit a sacrifice fly for his second RBI. Tyler Tolve stroked a three-run home run to left center and initially held up at second base on what he thought was a double before completing his trot around the bases.
Ty Tice tossed a scoreless ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts to complete the shutout.
The M-Braves have the day off tomorrow before a six-game road series against the Tennessee Smokies (Double-A Affiliate, Chicago Cubs) from July 18-23 at Smokies Stadium. The club returns home for a 12-game homestand from July 25-August 6 at Trustmark Park. For tickets and a full list of promotions, visit mississippibraves.com.
