Roanoke Dazzle News Release
ROANOKE, Va. â Cory Alexander and Isiah Victor drove the fire truck that put out the Flame in tonight's NBDL action at the Roanoke Civic Center. Alexander posted his third double-double of 2005 with 29 points and 14 assists, while Isiah Victor found himself with 28 points and 12 rebounds.
Trailing 57-59 at the end of the half, Roanoke (11-6) outscored Florida (3-14) 93-86 in the third and held on for a 123-117 victory when the clock finally ran down.
The teams traded baskets throughout the night, with the lead changing 13 times in the first quarter alone. A back and forth game through the first half, neither club held more than an eight point lead during the first two quarters.
"I can't get out there and play defense for them," said Flame Head Coach Dennis Johnson. "I can show them, I can teach them, I can scream at them!"
The Dazzle registered a total of 5 players in double digit figures, including Alexander and Victor. Matt Carroll continued his hot streak with 25, Terrence Shannon poured in 14, and Sung-Yoon Bang brought in another 13.
Matt Carroll would be the difference for Roanoke in the final period as the Dazzle veteran from Notre Dame posted 15 points, hitting 5 for 5 from the foul line. The match-up became close at 104-103 with 6:34 remaining, Roanoke finished the game on a 19-14 run to gain the victory.
"We made big plays when we needed to," said Dazzle Head Coach Kent Davison, "a lot of them were on the defensive end." "We would tip the ball out and get a breakaway or get a good stop and a lot of fast break points. That was the key tonight."
Florida's numbers reflected their undeniable effort. With only 9 players activated, 8 of those scored in double digits. Smush Parker led the pack with 20 points, Hiram Fuller posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, Byron Mouton contributed 18, Carl English had 17 off the bench and Darius Rice posted another 12. Tremaine Fowlkes and Tim Washington both tallied 10.
The Dazzle return to action on the road on Sunday, January 16 to face the Huntsville Flight at 5 p.m. as part of the Martin Luther King â NBDL Showcase in Columbus, Ga. Florida will also participate in the showcase on Sunday, taking on the Fayetteville Patriots at 11 a.m. For more information log on to www.nbdl.com.
