Daytona Tortugas News Release
JUPITER, FL - Jonathan Crawford and Jake Paulson combined to toss Daytona's first shutout of the year, blanking Jupiter, 2-0, Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
The Tortugas lone runs came in the firs two innings, and proved to be plentiful. In the first inning, with two on and one out, Gavin LaValley shot a base hit to center to score Daniel Sweet. It was the first time the Tortugas scored in the first inning all season.
Daytona then doubled it's lead an inning later, as Garrett Boulware doubled to right and scored on Sweet's single in the same direction.
Tortugas lone runs came against LHP Scott Squier, as the Jupiter bullpen allowed just one hit in four innings.
Jupiter had plenty of scoring opportunities, but never cashed in. They had 10 different base runners through the first five innings, but four double plays throughout the night halted their attack.
The moment of the game came in the fifth inning, when RHP Jonathan Crawford walked the bases loaded with nobody out. RHP Jake Paulson then came in and induced a 1-2-3 double play off the bat of Stone Garrett. Dustin Geiger then flied out to center to end the threat.
After wasting 13 base runners through the first eight innings, the ninth was drama free for Paulson, as he retired the side in order.
Paulson (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing five shutout innings. Squier (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs and six hits in five innings.
Daytona now heads home for Opening Weekend and an 11-game homestand at The Jack. RHP Jose Lopez (0-0, 1.69) will get the ball Thursday against Fort Myers and RHP Cody Stashek (0-1, 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM with a two-hour pregame show starting at 5 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: Wednesday was the first hitless game of the year for Nick Senzel... Wednesday was the first shutout since blanking Brevard County, 10-0, on September 1st, 2016...Paulson notched his first career Tortugas win in his 14th career appearance...Daytona is 4-0 when Gavin LaValley records a hit and 0-3 when he doesn't
