Daytona Tortugas News Release
JUPITER, FL - Daniel Sweet singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 15th inning, as Daytona outlasted Jupiter Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
The Hammerheads got their lone run in the fourth inning against RHP Wendolyn Bautista. With one out and runners at the corners, JJ Gould ripped a single into left field to get Jupiter on the board.
Daytona would respond in the sixth. Mitch Piatnik led off with a bunt single, then stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Shed Long sacrifice fly. It was Long's first RBI of the year. The game would remain tied all the way until the 15th inning.
The Tortugas had plenty of opportunities in the innings that followed. Daytona wasted a leadoff single in the 10th inning, before leaving Sweet in scoring position in the 11th. Daytona squandered another leadoff single in the 13th.
In the top of the 14th, with a runner at first and two away, Chris Okey slapped a double into the right field corner. The ball hopped up and hit out of play, keeping Alfredo Rodriguez from being able to score from first on the ground rule double. Narciso Crook then followed with a ground out the second to end the threat.
However, the Tortugas would finally break through in the 15th inning against RHP CJ Robinson. Reydel Medina began the frame with a walk and was bunted to second by Piatnik. That's when Sweet stepped to the plate and punched a single into centerfield to score the winning run.
Daytona's pitching was excellent, as five Tortugas combined to allow just one run on seven hits, while striking out 21.
RHP Robert Stock (1-0) earned his first Tortuga win, after tossing three shutout innings. RHP Geoff Broussard notched his second save of the year with a 1-2-3 15th inning. Robinson (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in his lone inning.
The road trip concludes Wednesday with the series finale. The Tortugas will throw RHP Jonathan Crawford (0-0, 1.93) against LHP Scott Squier (0-0, 2.25). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM with coverage beginning at 6:20 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: RHP Tanner Rainey has retired all 12 batters faced, striking out 10 of them...The 21 strikeouts were the most by Daytona's pitching staff in their Tortuga history...Tuesday was the longest game (in innings) since Daytona beat Fort Myers in 17 innings on July 18th, 2014...Tuesday was Daytona's longest road game since July 14th, 2014, also at Jupiter (13 innings) s.
