DAYTON, OH - Dayton Gems proud members of the International Hockey League are proud to announce Tim Hartung as Rookie of the Week. Hartung hails from Apple Valley Minnesota. The 6' 190 pound forward shoots right and is playing his first season of professional hockey. He played collegiate hockey for the Northern Michigan University Wildcats where he played 128 games accumulating 10 goals. 28 assists for a total of 38 points with only16 penalty minutes.
Hartung wrapped up Week 15 of his rookie scoring one goal and dishing out five assists and a plus three rating for his most productive week so far. He scored his first power play goal of the season Wednesday in Dayton's 4-1 loss in Port Huron. Hartung had his fourth multi-point night of the season Sunday in the Gems 7-4 win over Quad City where he assisted on five of the seven goals scored. The five point night tied a league-high with four other players. Since joining the Gems in late November, the 25-year-old St. Paul, Minnesota native has recorded 20 points (6 goals, 14 assists) in 25 games, which ties him for ninth among IHL rookies..
New on Defense
The Gems welcome Cody Hamilton. Hamilton played 20 games earlier this season with the CHL Laredo Bucks. He is originally from Lucknow, Ontario Canada. The 22 year old plays defense and stands 6'2" weighing in at 196. He played last year for the Tulsa Oilers of the CHL.
Last week for the Gems
The Gems played 2 home games this week. Port Huron defeated Dayton on Wednesday 4 - 1.
Dayton had their 1st visit from the Quad City Mallards on Sunday evening. The Gems shot down the Mallards 7 - 4. D
ayton saw their first hat trick of the season after forward
John Snowden scored a league-high tying four goals in the Gems 7-4 win against the Mallards. He also had an assist, giving him a total of five points on the night. Teammate Tim Hartung dished out five assists for his first five point night of the season.
Defensemen hold their own:
The Gems defensemen Nathan Oke and Preston Briggs are again tied for 1st in short handed assists. The Gems have 3 of the leagues highest scoring defensemen in the top 20: Phil Youngclaus (#7), Captain Greg Labenski (#12) and Joe Van Culin (#14)
Gems Rookies making their presence known
Dayton's Jon Ornelas is 4th in the league with assists for a Rookie. The team has 5 of the top rookie point scorers in the top 20: Mike Vaskivuo (#3), Jon Ornelas (#5), Corey Couturier (#10), Sam Bloom (#12) and Tim Hartung (#17). Mike Vaskivuo is in 2nd place for Rookie Goals.
Less Penalties - Great Powerplays
Dayton continues to be the least penalized team with and average of 15 penalty minutes.
The Gems are 2nd only to the Port Huron Icehawks in powerplays on the road.
Rooster Changes
The team has traded Dan Lapointe and Bryan Nathe to Flint for the future considerations due to Dayton.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE:
This Wednesday, January 27th the Gems head to Bloomington to take on the Prairie Thunder. Bloomington will turn around and play at Hara on Friday. Saturday it's back on the bus for the long ride to Quad City.
Wright Patterson Night - Jersey Auction
The Dayton Gems are proud to be hosting Wright Patterson Night on Friday, January 29th when the Gems take on the Bloomington Prairie Thunder. In honor of Wright Patterson Air Force Base the team will be wearing special Air Force Camouflage jerseys. Immediately following the game an auction will be held where you can bid and have the jerseys right off the back of your favorite players.
All base employees, active duty and retired military will receive a buy one ticket get one ticket free discount. Game time is 7:30pm and many special tributes are planned for the evening.

Each Monday evening join the Gems at Fox and Hound in Beavercreek at 830p as they become Miami Valley's newest American Idol judges
