ROANOKE, Va. - The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs announced on Thursday that goaltender Jacob Caffrey has been signed to a contract. Additionally, Mark Shifflett has been released as the emergency backup.

Caffrey rejoins the team after spending training camp in Roanoke. He appeared in the Dawgs preseason game against the Fayetteville Marksmen and made 12 saves on 12 shots during the first period. He was released during final roster cuts and later signed with the Knoxville Ice Bears as an emergency backup. Knoxville released Caffrey on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Bethesda, Maryland native is in his first full season out of Stevenson University, where he was UCHC Goaltender of the Year after going 11-8-7 with a 2.43 GAA and .924 save percentage during his senior season 2017-18. Caffrey also spent time with the Rail Yard Dawgs and the Pensacola Ice Flyers last season after completing his college career. He fills the spot vacated by Brad Barone, who was called up to ECHL Norfolk on Saturday.

The Rail Yard Dawgs return to the ice on Friday night in Knoxville against the Ice Bears. Puck drop at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum is scheduled for 7:30 PM. Air time on the Haley Toyota Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey Network is scheduled for 7:15 PM.
