Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC-The Charlotte Checkers have appointed Jason Dawe as assistant coach for the 2009-10 season, general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson announced on Wednesday.
Dawe, 36, joins the Checkers after a successful playing career in which he spent eight seasons in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers. In 366 career NHL games the former winger from North York, Ontario, tallied 86 goals and 90 assists for 176 points.
In 2004-05, his last professional season, Dawe skated for the Checkers under Coach Wilkinson, notching 13 goals and 18 assists in 49 games, while helping the team reach the Conference Finals. He has since remained in the Charlotte area coaching youth hockey.
"We are fortunate to have someone of Jason's ability and character local to us in Charlotte," Wilkinson stated. "He has a tremendous passion for the game and will be a natural fit in the coaching profession."
Dawe has also seen action in the American Hockey League, International Hockey League and Finnish Elite League. A proven champion, he has won a Calder Cup with the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack, an Ontario Hockey League Championship with the Peterborough Petes and a World Junior Hockey Championship with Team Canada.
"I am extremely excited and have been waiting for a chance like this for three years," Dawe said. "I am going to take full advantage of this opportunity and contribute to the success of the Checkers this season."
The Checkers are getting ready for their 17th season of play as a member of the ECHL and 16th as an affiliate of the New York Rangers. In the team's 16-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 12 times including five consecutive playoff appearances to date.
