Chiefs Beef-Up Blue Line

August 26, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs announced today that they have re-signed defenseman David Schulz for the 2009-10 season.

"Dave is a familiar face that will be welcomed back in our locker room. He will add size and a steady, dependable presence to our blue line, as well as veteran leadership," said Chiefs vice president and general manager Bill Bredin.

The 6-4, 210 pound blueliner returns to Johnstown for his second season. He came to Johnstown in Aug. 2008 via a trade with Ontario that sent former Chief Andrew Martens out west. Schulz was a steady presence in his second pro season as he logged 58 games in 2008-09 for the black and gold, third most among defensemen. He also chipped in offensively with 11 points (1G, 10), and showed a bit of a mean streak with 65 penalty minutes.

As a rookie in 2007-08 with the Texas Wildcatters, Schulz notched 20 points (8G, 12A) and 36 penalty minutes in 48 games. He has also appeared in nine AHL games between Manitoba (1) and Lake Erie (8) over the last two seasons and earned one assist.

Prior to turning pro, the 23-year-old spent his entire junior career in the Western Hockey League. His five seasons in the WHL were divided between Swift Current, Spokane, Saskatoon, and Kelowna. Schulz' best season came in 2004-05 with Swift Current where he led Broncos defensemen in scoring with 19 points (8G, 11A) and led the team in penalty minutes with 138. He was drafted in the eighth round (254 overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks.

The Winkler, Manitoba native joins Matt Robinson, Sean Berkstresser, Ryan Menei, Mike Knight, Greg Gallagher, and Kyle Bushee as Chiefs under contract for the 2009-10 season.
