Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem walked off with a 4-3 win over Salem in 14 innings on Wednesday in a game that was suspended by rain the previous night. Game two was suspended by rain in the top of the fourth inning with the Red Sox leading 1-0. The two teams will resume the game on Thursday starting at 6 p.m. A seven-inning contest will follow game one to conclude the star-crossed series.
Tickets for Wednesday's game may be exchanged for any remaining regular season game at BB&T Ballpark, based on availability.
Gates at BB&T Ballpark will open to the general public at 5 p.m. for Thursday's first game. Following the conclusion of game one, there will be a break of approximately 30 minutes before start of game two. Tickets dated for Thursday's regularly scheduled game will be honored for both games.
Fans with questions about Wednesday's rainout may call the Dash at (336) 714-2287.
Game one resumed in a scoreless tie with a man at first base in the top of the third inning. Salem (24-25, 66-53) scored three runs in against Jake Rasner to take a 3-0 lead. Peter Hissey, Will Middlebrooks and Alex Hassan each had RBI hits to push the Red Sox on top.
Winston-Salem (25-25, 68-52) got an RBI single from Brandon Short in the bottom of the inning against Lance McClain to narrow the gap to two runs. In the fourth, the Dash got an RBI double from Logan Johnson and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Drew Garcia to level the game at three apiece.
Both offenses went dormant after the early assault, as each team's bullpen put forth masterful performances. The teams went to extra innings and the Red Sox had a great chance in the tenth, loading the bases with one out. Tyson Corley, however, induced a 6-4-3 double play with Dan Butler at the plate to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 14th, Ozzie Lewis walked with one out and moved to third on a single by Johnson. Garcia then ended the game by driving a ball to right field for a game-ending sacrifice fly. Lewis scored from third base to send the Dash to its tenth walk-off win of the season.
Hector Santiago (4-5) pitched 1.1 perfect innings of relief for the win. William Latimer (5-5) took the loss, giving up the winning run and two hits in 2.2 innings.
The game lasted three hours and 48 minutes, making it the second-longest game the Dash has played this season. The 14 innings were also the second most played by Winston in 2010.
The regularly scheduled game did not start until 9:50 p.m. Salem grabbed an early lead when Middlebrooks hit a sacrifice fly off Dylan Axelrod in the first. Mitch Dening, who reached on a throwing error by third baseman Kyle Shelton, scored from third to make it 1-0 Red Sox.
The score held until the top of the fourth, when a light rain started to fall. With two outs and Drew Hedman at the plate, a bolt of lightening struck nearby. The umpires immediately cleared the field and after a 30-minute wait, the game was officially suspended as the rain intensified.
The contest will pick up at 6 p.m. Thursday with two outs in the top of the fourth inning with Hedman batting and Salem leading 1-0.
The audio broadcast of both games begins at 5:45 on www.wsdash.com .
