Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Salem and Winston played more than 15 innings on Monday night, with each team scoring four runs. Unfortunately, the Dash swiped a 4-3 marathon, 14-inning victory in the resumption of Tuesday's contest, as Drew Garcia's two-out sacrifice fly in the last of the 14th plated Ozzie Lewis to end it. In the nightcap, Salem led 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning when, almost simultaneously, a huge flash of lightning was accompanied by a vicious clap of thunder. The umpires immediately cleared the field, and soon thereafter, the skies opened up. The Sox and Dash will pick up the third game of their series on Thursday at 6 PM, completing the scheduled seven innings. After that, the two clubs will duel in another seven-inning affair in the series finale.

The 14-inning contest matched Salem's longest game of the 2010 season. Twelve of the 14 frames were played on Wednesday, after steady rainfall wiped up Tuesday's action through two scoreless innings.

The Sox struck early in the night, scoring three times in the top of the third. Peter Hissey and Will Middlebrooks both delivered RBI singles and Alex Hassan clocked an RBI double to give Salem a 3-0 edge against Winston reliever Jake Rasner. Little did the Sox know that those three runs would be the only that they would score against the Dash bullpen over the final 12 innings of the contest. Four Dash relievers combined to slam the door shut over 11 consecutive innings, and Hector Santiago, who tossed an inning and a third, picked up the win to improve to 4-5.

The Dash offense responded immediately to Salem's three-run third. Brandon Short lined an RBI single into center-field against Sox reliever Lance McClain, bringing Winston back within two in the last of the third. An inning later, Logan Johnson's double scored Seth Loman, and in a precursor of things to come, Garcia's sac fly plated Ozzie, tying the action at three.

Salem's bullpen was dominant for the next nine innings. Cesar Cabral went three scoreless, allowing just two hits. Pat Ryan tossed a season-high four innings, only yielding one hit and striking out three. Will Latimer retired seven of the first eight batters he faced over two and a third, but gave into the might Dash offense in the bottom of the 14th. After walking Lewis, Logan Johnson singled to right, advancing Lewis to third. Garcia came through with a deep fly to left, which Mitch Dening caught just shy of the track. He unleashed a powerful throw, but was too far from home to seriously threaten the winning run coming him from third.

In the nightcap, Salem scored a quick unearned run, with Dening reaching against Dylan Axelrod to begin the game. Third-baseman Kyle Shelton threw errantly to first on Dening's grounder, and Dening ran all the way to second. After Oscar Tejeda's single moved him to third, Middlebrooks' sac fly brought him home to make it 1-0.

On the mound for the Sox, righthander Miguel Gonzalez retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced through three scoreless innings. He would have retaken the mound for the last of the fourth, but due to Mother Nature, we never got that far.

Salem (24-25) and Myrtle Beach (26-27) are currently tied for the final playoff spot, with Kinston (24-28) only a game and a half back.

Brock Huntzinger and Nate Jones are the scheduled starters for the series finale, but first things first on Thursday, as the Sox and Dash will resume the third game of the series with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. The game will restart at 6PM at BB&T Ballpark.
